Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Have you ever heard of Thymic Carcinoma? Neither had I until last fall. That is when my recruit academy classmate and our Brother Marty Hauer was diagnosed with this rare cancer. By the end of September 2007, his doctor explained that traditional oncology treatments (chemo, radiation, etc.) could provide an extension and improved quality of life, but not a cure. A fierce competitor, barely into his 40’s, Marty has maintained a high level of fitness through diet and exercise his entire adult life. Marty believes, diagnosis be damned, his two young children (Colton – 10, and Rilee – 9) will witness how to overcome insurmountable odds!
Following a series of chemo treatments that temporarily halted the growth of tumors above and below his diaphragm, tests in early March showed the bombardment of poisons into Marty’s body provided only short-term relief. Since recovery is the only acceptable outcome, Marty and his doctors are developing a naturopathic/holistic treatment plan that offers a hopeful alternative to the traditional methods of treatment. These non-covered expenses, as well as the many other factors that go along with his cancer, have created an economic burden for his family.
Local 1747 humbly requests financial assistance for the Hauer family during his desperate effort to survive this cancer that is, more likely than not, a direct result of his work as a firefighter. Contributions can be deposited to an account that has been set up in his name at Washington Mutual Bank, or sent directly to the Kent Firefighters Foundation in his name:

Marty currently serves on the IAFF technical advisory committee for the Wellness/Fitness Initiative; is an IAFF peer fitness train-the-trainer; has spent his entire career with Local 1747 serving on our physical fitness committee; and continues the development of a regional wellness center for fire fighters. Any assistance that your local can provide in off-setting lost family income and his non-reimbursed, treatment-related expenses that may reach $6,000 per month is greatly appreciated.
Please contact Local 1747 President Mark Jones, 206.396.0929, or me if you have any questions.
