A Brief History of Our Local

Established on January 22, 1968, the Kent Firefighters Local 1747 was formed with the induction of 18 dedicated members into the International Association of Fire Fighters. Initially situated in a predominantly rural suburb south of Seattle, the area experienced a remarkable surge in population as residents sought refuge in bedroom communities, away from the bustling city. Currently, our union has expanded significantly, encompassing a membership of over 380 individuals who tirelessly provide a wide range of essential services to fulfill the needs of more than 260,000 residents.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the membership of Local 1747 underwent substantial growth, coinciding with the expansion of Kent city limits and rapid urban development. On January 1, 2014, the consolidation of the SeaTac City Fire Department brought in members from IAFF Local 2919. In subsequent years, members from IAFF Local 3062 in Maple Valley joined our ranks through a fire department service contract. The most recent addition took place on January 1, 2023, with the integration of IAFF Local 2088 into our department through a contract for services with the City of Tukwila.

We proudly serve the cities of Kent, SeaTac, Covington, Maple Valley, Tukwila and Fire Districts #37 and #43.
